Sutherland School is officially 100 years old.

The original building was put up in 1913, and served the community until 1967 when it was replaced with a new structure. 

The school marked the milestone with a special event that saw former students and staff come back to swap stories.

Among the returnees was Clara Dunlop, 83.  She taught kindergarten and grade 1 at the school from 1950 to 1963.

She made the trip from her Vancouver Island home to celebrate, and get a chance to catch up with some of her students.

A man faces assault charges after allegedly spraying two women with bear mace at a school Friday night.

Police arrived at Caswell Community School on 30th Street east after reports of an assault with a weapon.

Witnesses say the 21-year-old man sprayed two women with bear mace.

The man was arrested and charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace.

The women were taken to hospital for treatment.

A couple's fast thinking helped save the life of a woman on the University Bridge Friday night.

Police say a woman walked away from the Dubois Centre at the Royal University Hospital around 9:30 p.m. and crawled over the railing on the bridge.

A couple walking by noticed her and the man began talking to her while the woman with him called 9-1-1.

The man grabbed the woman after she left go of the railing.

Police arrived on scene and the woman was taken to safety.

Police say the couple was instrumental in saving the woman's life.

One man is in hospital following an early morning stabbing at at Stanley Place.

Around 4:50 a.m., police arrived at the 1200 Block of Idywyld Drive North and found a 21-year-old man with serious but non-life threatening stab wounds.

He was taken to hospital while police began their investigation.

Several witnesses have been interviewed and the investigation is ongoing.

In front of more than 10,000 fans at Credit Union Centre, the Saskatoon Blades came up just short falling to the London Knights 3-2.

The loss didn't come easy for the Knights who credit the Blades' netminder Andrey Makarov for almost stealing the show.

"He's a hell of a goaltender and he stood on his head and really kept his team in there, he made saves when he had to. It was tough," said Knights forward Max Domi.

Saskatoon Public Library workers have a new contract following three years without one.

The agreement, which was reached with the help of a mediator, gives library employess a sever per cent raise over three years.

Broken down, it means a $2 increase for library pages, who typically earn minimum wage, and a two per cent increase for other workers in the first year. This is followed by a two per cent and a 60 cent an hour raise in the second year and a three per cent raise in the third year.

Saskatoon's francophone community got an economic boost thanks to tax money from the federal government.

The Saskatoon Francophone Federation community centre received $81,287 from the government as part of the Economic Action Plan 2012.

Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Waneskewin Maurice Vellacott made the announcement at the centre, located on 4th Street just north of City Hall, Friday afternoon.

Despite sunny skies and warmer temperatures, the City of Saskatoon continues to feel the effects of a six-month winter.

Heading to city council on Tuesday is a report from the city's corporate finance department, showing an $850,000 budget deficit.

The majority of the increased spending came in light of the expanded pothole patching blitz and a shortfall in revenues from Saskatoon Light and Power, said the city's corporate finance manager Kerry Tarasoff.

Alleged Kijiji scammer Jason Hartlen will make his first court appearance in Saskatoon next week.

The 33-year-old is facing 17 charges of fraud under $5,000 after police received complaints that a man was collecting damage deposits for an apartment he didn't own.

"I'm not even going to say it's a possibility, there is more charges coming," said Staff Sergeant Keith Briant.

As of Thursday, a total of 26 people filed complaints with Saskatoon Police, saying they were scammed by Hartlen. Briant said that adds up to $27,275 in missing cash.

The Credit Union Centre is taking safety precautions by hiring an American crowd security company for Memorial Cup weekend.
 
“We want the guest to always feel safe and secure coming to any event,” said Greg Overstreet, the branch manager of Contemporary Services Corporation based in Georgia.
