RCMP member shoots and kills suspect in Holdfast home
Saskatchewan RCMP are confirming that one of its officers shot and killed a man in an incident last night
The Mounties say a member from the Craik detachment was called out to a home in Holdfast for an unspecified "criminal code investigation." At some point after the officer arrived a fight broke out between him and the 42-year-old owner of the home.
"During that altercation the officer discharged his firearm at the male, who was hit," explained RCMP Sgt. Craig Cleary. That 42 year old would die at the scene from that gunshot.
But Cleary insists the RCMP will not be revealing why the officer was called to the home or the shooting victim's name.
"We've just determined that it's just not a good idea at this point in time to release that information, however when the opportunity does become available we will put it out."
Cleary explains that the Regina Police Service has begun an "independent external investigation" into the incident. RCMP policy dictates that another police service investigates incidents when officers are involved. Once that process is complete the RPS will forward their findings to the Ministry of Justice. He says that's part of the reason why he has to be tight-lipped about the case.
"When we have a secondary body playing that primary role in an investigation like this we do our best to remain at arm's length."
The Ministry of Justice has also been asked to appoint an independent observer as well to ensure the investigation is as transparent as possible.
