Nearly two dozen students from Tommy Douglas Collegiate in Saskatoon marched outside of their high school on Tuesday while they were supposed to be in class. The students said they were walking out in support of their teachers who would be on strike Wednesday and Thursday.

The students held up homemade signs and posters while shouting at passing cars to honk if they support the teacher’s job action.

“The government sees that the teachers want more money but they just see that the students are standing back and watching, but it matters to us too,” said one student.

Students from grade nine to grade 12 say the government needs to properly invest in teachers.

“I think teachers should get paid more for what they do. They are teaching us knowledge for the world tomorrow,” said a student in grade 10.

The students said one of their classmates pulled a fire alarm to get the protest underway.

The walkout was organized by two female students, one in grade 10, the other in grade 11.

Students sent text and Facebook messages and went from class to class to drum up support for the walkout that was staged between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The students believe they will be punished but say they are not worried because it is for a good cause.
